on laptops for children [Nov. 12th, 2007|01:39 pm]

I have a lot of mixed feelings about this.

Predominantly, I'd love to have one, so that I can understand better what the project is doing, and if that means a kid gets one for free, all the better. The more realistic part of me says that it would be better if I just donated, rather than getting one.

I can also think of a million reasons why I shouldn't be a part of this, but there's something terribly Dickensian about what my brain does to me when I try.

On balance, I think that this is one of those things that it doesn't matter whether it's ultimately a good thing, or not. It fucks with the game, and that's an end in and of itself.

I don't think it does, really. Cell phones are what's really fucking with the game in the Third World. I expect the $200 laptop to be left way in their dust.
