Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.
--George Santayana, "Life of Reason", ch. 12
I am left with nothing but contempt and distrust for the field of historical study. I get the feeling that the study of history is only executed to maintain a certain viewpoint of history, or worse, to condemn us to repeating a past that never existed.
I wonder if a certain amnesia- carefully forgetting what we know now, so that we can start with a clean slate and build our mentality a priori, is desirable or even possible.
