you need

the font "Arial Unicode MS" apparently, which is only installed with Pro or Office 2k.

Ahhh, well there you go.

I've done something similar to this and I just used lots of images and sorted them programatically based on board state.

after installing mozilla (mozilla.org) I note that it displays uniformly and properly in that browser.
