I'm confused on the point of debate in helping to decide the presidency.

I can understand the purpose of congressional representatives debating, which I've never seen aired on TV. In congress, that's going to be what you do every day, right? Write bills, debate them, give speeches on the floor and all that? When does a president do that? Shouldn't we be testing them on how to give a monologue, or how to get concessions from foreign powers, or somesuch? Or, a la Independence Day, how to pilot a nuclear-tipped F-16?
